For a while I thought we would never see temps south of 90. This weekend the temps finally broke. Gardening in the 60’s is much more fun than gardening in the 90’s. Between Pat taking grad classes and my weekly visits to Chicago, gardening has suffered. Well, nothing gets my gardening juices flowing like a load of sweet peet. Should I think it’s weird that when I call my favorite sweet peet provider they ask me if I want the usual order?
We created a new bed using newspaper and sweet peet. We’re already planning what we should plant in it. Whatever goes in the bed, it will not be pumpkins. Pumpkins will stay in their present bed. Our pumpkin adventure has taken a life of its own and we learned some valuable lessons for next year. Next year we intend to control where the vines go. This year we were in awe that we could actually grow these things. We now have more pumpkins than there are kids in the neighborhood. It’s fun to watch the neighborhood kids riding their bikes and stopping by to look at pumpkins.
The rest of the front yard beds needed weeding and a refresher of sweet peet. You can tell that we don’t water the turf grass. The day lilies all need to be split and new homes found. When Pat figures out where they go, I’ll dig them out. The little patio area looks pretty cool from the second floor.

Jim - your post is inspirational. I really lost my garden mojo with all the 90 degree heat & humidity (and carnivorous mosquitoes). With the break in the temps, I was wondering what to do next? Then I saw your 'Wordless Wednesday' post, then today's post --- THANKS!
When I saw your post earlier, with the one picture and no commentary, I thought I was looking at a pumpkin patch. That is really neat. Your peet beds look great.
Wish we would get a break in the weather, but we've probably got a couple of months before we see cooler weather.

Your beds look very fresh and pretty! Yes, the cooler temps are welcome, aren't they? Still hot down here in FL but starting to break ever so slightly. Looking forward to your new veggies.
