success
The tree trunk pots turned out pretty good. They look cool
in the garden. I think there’s some gardener term like texture or height or
something like that to describe their effect. I just know they look cool. and I’ve
got three more out back to work on.
Here's some pics of the hosta patch. I know I should be thinning this stuff out, but oh, what a job.

cooler than pots
I found the answer to the “no more pots” edict. The answer is tree trunks, not live ones, but dead ones. Jimmy shaved the bark off of three of them and off I went. Maybe I should have left these trunks dry out more, but if I had, I probably would have lost interest, besides, I have a big drill. Big drill or not, not quite dry wood eats drill bits. So if you try this at home, do not be discouraged. The end result is worth the effort.
We’re going to put rescue hosta in the tops and begonias in
the sides. Initially, we were going to put white impatiens in the sides but
about the only place the deer don’t troll is on the patio and these things are
going in the woods. If deer were carnivores, I wouldn’t have this love hate
relationship with them. Daniel Boone, Johnny Appleseed and those guys would
have hunted them down. Sam the Sham would have sung about big bad Bambi and not
the wolf. Well, once again I’ve wandered off course.

hosta in pots
I’ve been buried at work. I feel like Governor La Petomane in "Blazing Saddles." "Work, work, work." The weather’s been
lousy, so working in the water soaked back yard has to wait a few more weeks.
Last Saturday we had a break. It was cold but sunny. I had a chance to work on
the hosta we left winter over in pots. I thought that a quick freshen up with compost
would be all the hosta needed. Just like Governor La Petomane wasn’t the
brightest bulb, neither was I regarding hosta in pots. I needed to find bigger
pots. My hostas were pot bound. Who would have thought? Some got put in bigger
pots and some got split to make friends and neighbors happy. The need for more
and bigger pots smacked right up against my promise to Pat not to buy any more
pots, and besides, we just don’t have any room for more pots. I think it’s time
to get some more soil tiles from the construction tile place in Akron.
